PS3 Services & Delidding
The PS3 is a brilliant console with a library worth preserving — but it has well-known thermal and hardware weaknesses that catch up with every machine eventually. Steve fixes the root cause, not just the symptom.
The PS3 isn't a fragile console — it's an over-engineered one that was let down by thermal design decisions that made sense in 2006 but don't hold up twenty years later. Understanding why it fails is the first step to fixing it properly.
The PS3 — particularly the original fat models — runs extremely hot by design. The Cell processor and RSX GPU generate significant heat, and Sony's original thermal solution was never going to last forever. Dried-out paste, clogged fans, and degraded solder joints are the inevitable result of years of heat cycling.
The YLOD happens because the solder joints connecting the main chips to the motherboard crack under repeated thermal stress. Every time the console heats up and cools down, those joints expand and contract — and eventually they fail. It's not a manufacturing defect, it's physics. But it is fixable.
Sony used a thermal interface material between the Cell die and its heatspreader that degrades significantly over time. What starts as an effective thermal conductor becomes a crumbly, dried-out barrier that traps heat instead of transferring it. Delidding and replacing it is the most effective single intervention you can make.
The PS3 has a library of games that simply aren't available anywhere else — and original hardware is the best way to play them. With proper servicing, a PS3 can run reliably for many more years. Steve's approach is to fix the root cause, not just the symptom.
From a quick thermal paste refresh to a full reball and delid — every job gets the same honest assessment and quality workmanship.
The Yellow Light of Death is the PS3's most notorious fault. A reflow uses controlled heat to re-establish failed solder joints on the RSX GPU and Cell processor — getting your console back up and running. A solid short-term fix, particularly on consoles that haven't been neglected for years.
Good for: consoles that have recently developed YLOD and are otherwise in good condition.
Reballing goes further than a reflow. The chip is fully removed, old solder is stripped, and fresh solder balls are applied before the chip is re-seated. It's more involved and takes longer, but it's the more permanent solution — especially on consoles that have already been reflowed once.
Good for: consoles that have been reflowed before, or where a longer-lasting fix is the priority.
The PS3's Cell processor runs hot — and the factory thermal interface material between the die and the heatspreader degrades badly over time. Delidding removes the heatspreader, cleans off the old dried-out TIM, and replaces it with high-performance thermal paste or liquid metal. The result is a significantly cooler-running processor, which reduces thermal stress on the whole board.
Often done alongside a full service — the single biggest thing you can do to extend a PS3's life.
Even without delidding, replacing the thermal paste between the heatsinks and the chips makes a real difference. Factory paste dries out and cracks over years of heat cycling. Fresh, quality paste restores proper thermal transfer and brings temperatures down noticeably.
Included as standard in every full service.
PS3s are dust magnets. Over the years, the fan and heatsink fins clog up with compacted dust that chokes airflow and sends temperatures soaring. A proper deep clean — not just a blast of compressed air — removes the buildup and gets the cooling system working as it should.
Included as standard in every full service.
Disc read errors, drives that won't eject, or a laser that's given up the ghost — Steve diagnoses and repairs PS3 optical drive faults. Where the laser unit has failed, a replacement is fitted and calibrated.
Covers: disc read errors, ejection faults, laser replacement.
A damaged or broken HDMI port is a common PS3 fault — particularly on consoles that have been moved around a lot or had cables yanked out at an angle. Steve replaces the port at board level, restoring a solid, reliable connection.
Covers: no signal, intermittent picture, physically damaged port.
The PS3's hard drive is user-replaceable, and upgrading to a larger drive gives you more space for games, saves, and downloaded content. Steve handles the swap and data transfer so you don't lose anything in the process.
Covers: storage upgrades, failing drive replacement, data transfer.
For eligible PS3 models, Steve can install Custom Firmware — opening up homebrew, emulators, backups, and a range of additional functionality. CFW installation is only possible on certain hardware revisions; Steve will confirm compatibility before any work begins.
Note: CFW is for personal use only. Steve will advise on compatible models.
Not sure what's wrong — or just want to make sure your PS3 is in good shape before it lets you down? A full service covers a thorough clean, fresh thermal paste, fan inspection, and a complete functional check. Steve will flag anything that needs attention and advise honestly on whether it's worth addressing.
Recommended for any PS3 that's been in storage or running hot.
From the Bench
Steve has written a detailed walkthrough of what a PS3 service actually involves — from opening it up to testing it back on the bench. Worth a read if you want to understand what you're paying for.
Whether it's showing the YLOD, running hot, or just needs a proper service — bring it to the bench. South Wales, no fix no fee, honest pricing.
