MacBook Repair in South Wales — A Real Repair Story

Not every repair job is a mystery. Sometimes a customer walks in, describes the problem clearly, and you just get on with it. That's exactly what happened recently when a customer brought in their son's Apple MacBook that had stopped working.

Here's how it went from fault to fixed — and why this kind of job is exactly what the bench is here for.

The Problem

The customer explained that the MacBook had been working fine, then one day it simply wouldn't boot. No startup chime, no Apple logo — just a black screen. It had been sitting in a drawer for a few weeks while they figured out what to do with it.

Sound familiar? It's one of the most common things I hear. People assume a dead laptop means an expensive repair or a trip to an Apple Store, so they put it off. In reality, a lot of these faults are very fixable.

The Diagnosis

First things first — I always start with the basics before assuming the worst.

Power check: Was the battery completely flat? A MacBook that's been sitting unused for weeks can drain to the point where it won't even show a charging indicator. I left it on charge for 20 minutes before attempting anything else.

Visual inspection: No obvious physical damage, no liquid ingress marks, no swollen battery. Good signs.

Boot attempt: After charging, it still wouldn't boot normally. Time to dig deeper.

SMC reset: The System Management Controller handles power functions on Macs. A corrupted SMC can cause all sorts of weird behaviour including failure to boot. I performed an SMC reset — a simple key combination that takes about 30 seconds.

NVRAM reset: Next up, the non-volatile RAM. This stores settings like display resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone. Resetting it clears out any corrupted values that might be blocking the boot process.

After both resets, the MacBook booted straight up. Clean desktop, all files intact, running perfectly.

The Result

Total repair time: under an hour. Cost: very reasonable — well below what a main dealer would charge, and with no unnecessary parts replaced.

The customer was happy, and so was I. That's the kind of job that reminds you why straightforward, honest repair work matters. No upselling, no replacing parts that don't need replacing, no drama.

What This Tells You About MacBook Repairs

A lot of people assume Apple products are impossible to repair outside of Apple's own network. That's simply not true for the majority of common faults.

Here are some of the MacBook issues I regularly deal with at the bench:

  • Won't boot / black screen — often SMC/NVRAM related, or a failing SSD
  • Slow performance — usually a full storage drive or too many startup apps
  • Overheating / fan running constantly — dust build-up in the cooling system
  • Battery not charging — can be the cable, the port, or the battery itself
  • Cracked screen — screen replacement is available for many MacBook models
  • Keyboard issues — sticky keys, unresponsive keys, liquid damage

Not every fault is a quick fix, and I'll always be upfront if a repair isn't cost-effective. That's what the No Fix No Fee guarantee is about — you don't pay if I can't sort it.
